Actor Mark Consuelos Joins 'Diabetes Freedom' Effort
NEW YORK, June 16, 2005
In time for Father's Day, actor Mark Consuelos is joining forces with the makers of Glucerna(R) Bars and Shakes and FreeStyle(R) blood glucose monitoring systems to honor his father, Saul Consuelos, and to take part in a national educational effort to help the 18 million Americans with diabetes better manage their condition. Arthritis of the Spine Often Overlooked in Children
SHERMAN OAKS, Calif., June 15, 2005
When kids or teens experience aching joints and stiffness it may be more than growing pains. It may be arthritis of the spine and other joints (ankylosing spondylitis), which researchers report can often go undiagnosed for years and years, leading to serious problems in adulthood. The findings, generated from a national life impact study and reported in the June 15 issue of Arthritis Care and Research, highlight a need for increased awareness and earlier treatment of the disease.

Two Indicators of Diabetes Quality of Care Show Dramatic Improvement

New Harvard Study: Sick Infants in Hospital Intensive Care Units Exposed to High Levels of Toxic Phthalate
BOSTON, June 8, 2005
A first-of-its-kind study released today by Harvard University scientists found that babies in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) receiving intensive therapy with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) medical devices were exposed to a toxic phthalate at very high levels -- an average of 25 times higher than the general population and up to 50 times higher for the most exposed. As their medical treatments intensified, the sick infants were exposed to progressively higher exposures of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, or DEHP.
