The Foundation was awarded with a CRPF Quality of Life grant in the Health Promotion category. The Foundation is named in honor of Lisa Beth Gerstman, daughter and sister of the founders. Lisa, whose life ended in a tragic summer camp bus accident in 1970, serves as inspiration for the Foundation's work. The grant from CRPF will enable the Foundation to send 30 children with physical disabilities to attend three-week camp sessions, at no cost, at one of the established Foundation camp programs across the New York Metro area. Foundation camp programs are in place at the following locations: Cross Island YMCA, Bellerose, NY; McBurney YMCA, Manhattan; Prospect Park YMCA, Brooklyn; and Samuel Field YM & YWHA, Little Neck, NY. The Foundation also partners with the Southampton Fresh Air Home, Southampton, NY and Abilities/Henry Viscardi School, Albertson, NY to enable children with physical disabilities across the region to enjoy summer activities. CRPF Health Promotion grants were launched by CRPF in 2001 in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Grant No. U10/CCU220379- 01). These grants are awarded to non-profit organizations that address the needs of people living with paralysis caused by spinal cord injuries and other injuries, diseases and birth defects, including (but not limited to) stroke, spina bifida, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. All funding for the health promotion grants is provided by the CDC's grant to the Foundation. "The Lisa Beth Gerstman Foundation is extremely pleased that the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation is supporting our programs with this generous grant," says Foundation co-founder Dan Gerstman. "We greatly appreciate the funding, which will ensure that children across the region realize their dreams of attending summer camp."
