On Monday May 16 LiveArts staging a reading of its new script about the legendary Florida blues singer, Diamond Teeth Mary.
It will be at 7:30 p.m. at the Beninger Theatre on the campus of Eckerd College in St. Petersburg. Ask the guard for directions to the theater after you enter the campus. Admission is free. "This is a fun part of the script development process," said Harry Chittenden, LiveArts' executive director. "We welcome and need a live audience to give us feedback. Come and bring your friends." Diamond Teeth Mary inspired audiences in the Bay Area for two decades, capping a career that spanned eighty years. LiveArts is producing an original play with music about her life.
Playwright Levy Lee Simon has worked on the project for nearly a year and has completed the third draft of the play. Simon has presented work in New York and Los Angeles and is currently under contract with three film companies including Spike Lee's Ten Acres and a Mule.
Eckerd College Professor Ellen Graham is directing the reading. Graham was the former guest director of WordBRIDGE, the Eckerd program for workshopping scripts selected from a national contest for college and graduate students.
Liz Pennock and Dr. Blues will also be on hand to play a few blues tunes with the reading's actors. The St. Pete couple toured with Diamond Teeth Mary for over a decade. Eckerd College is located at 4200 54th Ave. South. Click here for a Google Map. |
