New Niche for Self-Publishing Books Goes Digital

A new online service helps self- publishing authors market and sell their work on the Web. Interactive Design & Publishing (http://www.idpublish.com/ ), founded by designer Archie Miller, leverages art and technology to help writers not just publish, but also sell their books online. Authors can select marketing options from a complete package that includes a Web site, an online store, and a press release.

"Anyone can print your book for money," says Miller, "but ID&P can help you market it and provide the means to sell it online. We can publish books of any type -- novels, poetry, text books, or instructional manuals, for example."

"I think this type of service represents the original spirit of the World Wide Web as envisioned by its creators. The Web acts a conduit for artists and writers promoting fresh ideas unbound by the restrictions of commercialism. Anyone can be a publisher."

The basic package includes typesetting the manuscript, book cover design, Web site with click-to-order button, and a press release. The basic Web site includes a page about the author, a page about the book and a page with reviews and comments. The press release included in the basic package covers one US state or local region. That same press release is also sent, via the Web, to thousands of online news organizations.

"Many options are available for upgrading the service," says Miller, "authors may decide to add more pages to their site or expand the coverage of the press release." In addition, Archie Miller noted that other services like proof reading and editing are also available as an add-on service.

Interactive Design & Publishing's first publication recently went online - - "Passion for Health," written by Dr. Greg Mestanas. His work represents the fruition of his long-held career goal of integrating his experiences in the fields of naturopathy, psychology and behavioral sciences. Archie Miller has been building Web sites since the first Mosaic browsers became popular in the early 1990's. He worked with many large companies publishing to the web for the first time, including American Express, Amtrak, General Electric, Owens Corning, and Wachovia. In 1996 Archie was a leading team member for the L'eggs web site, winning the first-ever Gold Clio award given to a web site.

Recently, Archie began teaching Web design courses at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond for artists needing to display artwork online.
