Long-time investigative reporter Bruce Plasket spent a full year on the CU story, fighting every step of the way against the forces of political correctness that dominate Boulder. Ultimately, he concluded, there was only one way to tell what really happened, and decided to write BUFFALOED: Racism, Sexism, Injustice, And The Media Frenzy That Created a Scandal That Wasn't (Pearson Prentice Hall; August 2005). The story he tells is shocking: a cache of false charges and hidden agendas, of manipulative PR firms and politicians without integrity -- and above all, of rampant political correctness, media bias, and incompetence. Falsehoods have consequences, and Plasket reveals them: what it was like for the players and coaches to live through these events, and find their reputations in tatters. Plasket, who was given unprecedented and total access to the team's practices, meetings, meals and sideline during the 2004 season, says the book reveals disturbing facts about the case which have never been reported and which he says will "change the way people think about the so-called scandal, the way they think about these young men and the way they think about the media."
"This is not a book about sports," says Tim Moore, VP, Editor-in-Chief, Pearson Prentice Hall. "This is a book about race, gender and trying cases in the press instead of in the courts." Many people won't like the story Plasket tells, but it is the unvarnished truth -- and it's about time someone came forward to set the record straight.
"As an editor, I look for books that can change our lives and have an impact," continues Moore. "This story meets that criteria: the story about how journalists all too often look for dirty laundry and scandal, rather than the news and truth, as Don Henley reminded us in his classic '80's song, Dirty Laundry. It is an appalling story of the abuse of media power and the ruining of innocent peoples' lives."
"This book will expose the real agenda of those who took full advantage of both the media's bias and its preference for political correctness over factual correctness," Plasket says. "It shows how innocent young men, most of them black, were victimized by the incompetence of the media and its allegiance to the agenda of vindictive politicians and a small group of extremists."
