Former U.S. Secretary of State and Senior Partner of O'Melveny & Myers LLP Warren Christopher will give college scholarships to ten students from LAUSD High Schools this Friday, June 17, 2005 at the Los Angeles Central Library. A $1.5 Million endowment established by the firm in the former secretary's name will allow ten more economically challenged Los Angeles students to join the ranks of 80 former "Christopher Scholars" who have gone on to attend prestigious Universities including Yale, MIT, Brown, Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, and UCLA.

Now in its twelfth year, this is the first year that the Warren Christopher Scholarship Program has had the honor of acknowledging siblings as "Christopher Scholars." The "sister scholars" Alejandra Navarro, a 2003 scholarship recipient who is headed to college in the fall and Giselle Navarro, a 2005 scholar will receive her award of $16,000 towards her college education this year. Both sisters attend Sylmar High School and have stood out in academic strength and in overcoming adversity among the 50 applicants -- one from each LAUSD High School in each of their respective award years.

O'Melveny & Myers LLP established the Warren Christopher Scholarship Program in 1992 to honor its former Chairman and current Senior Partner. The scholarship program selects ten students promising but economically challenged students from ten Los Angeles High Schools each year and each student is awarded $16,000 for college expenses. Since its inception, the $1.5 million endowed program has distributed $800,000 to students who have defied serious economic barriers and personal hardships in Los Angeles.
