A new survey from Columbia University and Steve Ross!
11th Annual Survey of Media with Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism
Dear writers, editors, producers and news directors:

I'm writing to ask you to participate in my 11th Annual Survey of Media with Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism -- by far the largest and the most comprehensive study available on how ethics, news events, innovation and technology affect the way you -- professional journalists -- work and report.

As a journalism professor who has taught full-time for almost 20 years, I have always been interested in examining how our nation's newsrooms are changing in response to news events, social and business trends and new technologies.  How better to prepare students for 21st Century journalism?  These studies have been highly successful because of you and we are proud that this research has become part of the curriculum not only at Columbia but other journalism and communication schools around the world.

Click here to complete this year's survey:  https://www.informationsurvey.com/e1046e/

This survey has been reviewed and approved by Columbia University's Institutional Review Board.  Proper policies and procedures have been followed carefully to ensure the confidentiality and privacy of your responses (please see below for details). If you have any questions, please contact me, or the IRB administrator at mailto:ad23@columbia.edu (IRB approved study number AAAB3446). Our research is funded by Euro RSCG Magnet, a public relations firm that shares my commitment to understanding the impact of current events on journalistic trends and practices. But no information about your identity is captured in the survey process in any way; your responses are completely anonymous, even to me.

This year's survey should take about 15 minutes to complete. Thanks in advance for your time.

Sincerely,
Steven S. Ross
Associate Professor, Professional Practice

To maximize privacy, the link above will take you to a secure Web site for the survey itself. If you are unable to click on the link, please copy and paste it into your browser. If you experience any problems getting into the survey, try again in a few minutes. Sometimes, the Internet is just slow. Some corporate systems do not allow accessing secure Web sites, in which case you may wish to respond from another location.

Please contact me if you have any questions or would like to receive a copy of this study when it becomes available.  As always, I make the raw survey data available to anyone who wants it, in the interest of stimulating more research around the world.

Details about my methodology and about privacy:

To shorten the survey and make it more "user-friendly" there are actually two sets of questions (with some overlap, so that we can cross-tabulate some responses). Half the journalists on my survey list are getting one version, and half are getting the other. This has required doubling the number of journalists invited to fill out the survey.

I will not be capturing the names or e-mail addresses of respondents. We have been asked by Columbia's Institutional Review Board, which operates under US federal regulation, to identify any possible risks to you in responding to this survey. We do not specifically ask for sensitive information, so risk appears low. If your employer monitors your Web use, however, and does not like some of your answers, this could cause problems with your employer.
