Sensational development in sustainable aquaculture
VANCOUVER, May 31, 2005
What would be the consequences to the Canadian fish farming industry if a cost-effective land-based fish farming system were to be developed? Is it possible that the environmental problems concerning disease, escaping of fish, chemical use and sea lice have been solved? Can optimal environmental conditions be maintained at a farm that not only ensures the proper health and welfare of the fish, but in doing so, reduces feed requirements by 30-40%? Why is it that modern multinational companies continue to use open net pen technology?

Eco Farm has developed patented technology for land-based fish farming that will become the benchmark in the future for environmentally sound and sustainable fish production. The system ensures the safest and most productive way to produce various species including salmon, cod, and shrimp, in both fresh and seawater, at a very competitive price.

The result of international studies have shown that optimizing water quality at a fish farm will significantly reduce mortality and improve feed utilization. This can have wide reaching effects. As an example, the Norwegian salmon industry in 2003 used 768 thousand tonnes of feed. If the total production of fish was instead reared in closed land-based farms, it would be possible to save over 330 thousand tonnes of feed. This is the equivalent of some 800 thousand to 1300 thousand tonnes of wild caught fish per year that would be available for other purposes. The effect of improved feed utilization in percent, would be even greater for Canada, based on historical data.

Transferring fish production on-shore and integrating it with processing will allow the Canadian aquaculture industry to export a wide range of value-added aquacultural products. This in turn will open up new areas for employment and specialization.
